The adaptation by the Collectif 49701 of the most famous novel by Dumas in the form of an insolent, popular and funny theatrical series is here adapted for the screen. Nothing will be as expected: the musketeers will have neither cape nor sword, the guards of the cardinal will be embodied by the national police, Anne of Austria will be flanked by a transvestite cameraman, and Milady will look like the heroine of Kill Bill. The actors all play several roles, and the theatre is here a force of freedom that allows authors and directors to draw on a thousand references, to overturn clichés, and above all to do justice to the unbridled, messy and joyful energy of these musketeers, which “would die on the spot rather than return their sword.”
